● What is Lexile?
Lexile, a system to measure reading comprehension and text difficulty, was established in 1989, with funding from the National Institute of Health. It was developed by Metametrics, an American educational company, after 15 years of research. Lexile scores help teachers, parents, and students select appropriate books and reading materials. The score consists of two parts: one score that measures the reader’s ability, and another that measures the complexity of the text. By matching these two scores, users can find books that align with their reading level, so as to improve reading skills. Lexile scores typically range from 200L to 1700L, with higher numbers indicating greater difficulty.
