— Introduction —

The Center for Augmented and Virtual Reality (CAVR) at Nanyang Technological University
The Center for Augmented and Virtual Reality (CAVR) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a world-class interdisciplinary research and application development center in Singapore. Equipped with advanced technologies and facilities, CAVR has hosted numerous major international conferences and events on emerging technologies. Its research spans virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, 3D printing, and other interdisciplinary fields. CAVR also serves as a leading training hub for global talent pursuing cutting-edge research and innovation
Since its launch in 2024, the programme has run for five cohorts, providing students in Grades 10–12 with a high-quality platform for academic growth. In winter 2027, the ASEEDER × NTU CAVR Official Winter School will welcome students in Grades 10–12. Built around two of the host organization’s academic strengths, Materials Chemistry & Biochemical Engineering, and Electrical & Electronic Engineering, the programme offers a comprehensive curriculum on NTU’s campus. Guided by senior faculty, students will explore cutting-edge technologies and real-world applications while developing academic knowledge and skills, broadening their international outlook, and strengthening cross-cultural communication.

All program tutors are meticulously selected by NTU, who are distinguished faculty members from NTU's colleges. They are committed to guiding students through the intricacies of their research fields, providing insights into the latest technological research trends within the industry.
Multiple official certificate of completion
Students who enroll in the programme and meet the completion requirements (completion rate of assignments, attendance, etc.) will be awarded the official Nanyang Technological University Certificate of Completion and a UCAS-accredited Research Learning Certificate. Furthermore, the top-performing team in each course will receive a formal Recommendation Letter.

Assoc Prof. Xiao
NTU | Associate Professor, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Associate Professor Xiao is a senior scholar at NTU’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specializing in AI networks, cybersecurity, smart grids, and risk management. He contributed to the Singapore–ETH Zurich Future Resilient Systems programme and has published hundreds of papers on complex networks and system resilience. He also serves on international journal editorial boards and IEEE conference committees. His research applies complex network theory to social, energy, and digital systems, bridging mathematics, engineering, and social governance.
Prof. Xiao
Professor, NTU MAE | Additive Manufacturing Expert
Professor Xiao has over 30 years of experience in advanced materials and intelligent manufacturing, specializing in composites, additive manufacturing, and failure analysis. His innovations include a 3D-printed “manta ray” wave-energy system and piezoelectric surface acoustic wave filters. He has published over 160 papers with applications in aerospace and marine engineering. His current research integrates smart materials and AI to advance intelligent manufacturing. -
Assoc Prof. Cai
Associate Professor, NTU MAE | Deputy Director, Center for Augmented & Virtual Reality
Associate Professor Cai is an internationally recognized expert in VR, AI, and robotics, and Deputy Director of the Center for Augmented and Virtual Reality. With a background in mathematics, computer graphics, and engineering, he has spent over two decades integrating digital technologies with real-world industries. He has published over 200 papers and holds multiple international patents. His research spans VR, the metaverse, AI, digital twins, and robotics, with applications in healthcare, smart buildings, special education, and engineering training.
Assoc Prof. Du
NTU | Associate Professor, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Associate Professor Du is an internationally recognized expert in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and smart materials. He joined NTU after earning his PhD from Imperial College London in 1991. His research focuses on MEMS sensors, smart materials, and computational engineering. He received NTU’s Teaching Excellence Award in 1999 and served as Head of Engineering Mechanics from 2008 to 2011. His team has advancedthinfilm technologies, microfluidic chips, and smart materials, with applications in industrial inspection and biomedicine.

Material Chemistry
This course aims to provide a broad introduction to contemporary topics in materials science, with an emphasis on relating materials chemistry to their unique properties and real-world applications. Students will discuss fundamental chemistry governing the properties of various materials, and gain insights on current material-based technologies and research. Upon completing this course, students will be able to appreciate the importance of materials in our everyday lives and explain their working principles.Reference Teaching Themes:

Electronic and Electrical Engineering
