Introduction

The International Economics Olympiad (IEO), was organized by the International Olympic Academy (IOA) and established in 2016 by the Institute of Economic Education (INEV). Expanding rapidly, it now engages about 350,000 students globally, transcending its national roots to embrace an international audience.

IEO was led by Vernon L. Smith, an American economist and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002 served as the chairperson of the academic committee. And it garners support both nationally and internationally from esteemed entities like the Ministries of Education, Greece Central Banks, Academic Institutions. The annual global finals are held at the birthplace of the Olympics - Olympia, Greece.

The IEO Committee will invite outstanding economics students from the preliminary round to participate. The top five students will represent Team China at the Olympiad to compete with global talents. Winners will also have the chance to join the St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge Economics Camp for an immersive learning experience and receive an official certificate.

Procedures Introduction

International Economics Olympiad National Round consists of five rounds: Oral Exam, Economic Challenge,
Economic Quiz Bowl, Model World Bank, International Trading Expo & Challenge.

Format:Individual sessions and Team sessions

1.Individual

Oral Exam

Using presentations as a medium to inspire students’ research depth, expressive power, and spontaneous analytical thinking, fostering critical thinking through the exchange of ideas.

Format: 5-minutes individual presentation in English. Topics related to economics that will be assigned 1 hour in advance.

2.Individual

Economic Challenge

Strengthen the foundations of economics, enhance students’ ability to apply knowledge through case studies, and connect theory with real-world issues.

Format: Paper test, 2 rounds, including Economic knowledge, Diagram analysis, Analytical essay, Financial analysis and calculation.

3.Team

Economic Quiz Bowl

Teams go head-tohead, testing quick thinking and knowledge application, with teamwork and strategy determining the outcome.

Format: Team-based challenge comprising multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Teams respond using a buzzer system, with points awarded to those who answer both accurately and promptly.

4.Team

Model World Bank

Team role-play engaging in multilateral debates on global hot topics, testing students’ global perspective.

Format: : Each team represents a country to discuss and debate a series of current hot topics. Team members are required to conduct in-depth research on their assigned country prior to the challenge.

5.Team

International Trading Expo & Challenge

Divided into the International Trade Expo and the International Trade Challenge, the Expo aims to raise visibility and expand trade opportunities for participating countries. The Trade Challenge then allows participants to engage in hands-on market practice to achieve the best possible deals.

Format: Each team represents a country or company, negotiating with others to form alliances, acquire resources, and complete their respective objectives.
